MathsBites provides real maths help
for real families

Your parent guide to maths starts here.

Step-by-step support so you feel ready to guide your child’s maths journey - from day one.

Stage 3, Part A - Year 5

Year 5 is a turning point in primary maths...another new Stage, more new concepts and an expectation to apply their skills with greater independence.

They'll be working with larger numbers, fractions, percentages, and even beginning to explore concepts in geometry and measurement in more depth. Maths becomes more and more connected to the real world.

At MathsBites, we know parents want to feel ready to support this leap. We’ll show you how concepts are taught in Year 5, explain the strategies behind them, and share practical tips for reinforcing learning at home.

Whether this is your first time navigating Year 5 or you’ve supported older siblings before, MathsBites is here to help you guide your child with confidence and keep maths engaging and achievable.

What your child learns in Stage 3, Part A

Stage 3 (Years 5–6) introduces abstract thinking, flexible strategies, and real-world applications.

For example:

  • Number & Algebra: Understanding place value to millions, using efficient strategies for all four operations, and solving problems with number patterns and algebraic reasoning.

  • Fractions, Decimals & Percentages: Comparing and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages; solving problems involving mixed numbers and improper fractions.

  • Measurement: Calculating perimeter, area, and volume; converting between metric units; using formulas for rectangles and prisms.

  • Geometry: Classifying angles and triangles; exploring symmetry, transformations, and properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects

  • and this is just the start. For the full list, click here.

MathsBites videos walk you through these concepts using the same language and methods taught in classrooms right across Australia.
